Netflix Orders Spike Lee’s ‘She’s Gotta Have It’

Netflix has gotta have Spike Lee’s newest creation.

According to TVLine, Netflix has officially placed a ten episode order for a new series entitled She’s Gotta Have It. The series is actually a modern-day remake of Spike Lee’s inaugural feature film of the same name, which premiered in 1986.

Reportedly, the series was said to be considered by Showtime before finally teaming up with the Netflix family. Spike Lee has also issued a statement about the Netflix order in his patently Spike Lee way:

SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT Has A Very Special Place In My Heart. We Shot This Film In 12 Days (2 Six Day Weeks) Way Back In The Back Back Of The Hot Summer Of 1985 For A Mere Total of $175,000. Funds That We Begged, Borrowed and Whatnot To Get That Money. This Is The 1st Official Spike Lee Feature Film Joint And Everything That We Have Been Blessed With In This Tough Business Of Film All Have Been Due To SGHI. Now With The Passing (August 8th) Of The 30th Anniversary, It’s A Gift That Keeps On Giving. We Are Getting An Opportunity To Revisit These Memorable Characters Who Will Still Be Relevant And Avant Garde 3 Decades Later. With All That Said It Was My Wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, Producer In Her Own Right,Who Had The Vision To Take My Film From The Big Screen And Turn It Into An Episodic Series. It Had Not Occurred To Me At All. Tonya Saw It Plain As Day. I Didn’t. We Are Hyped That NETFLIX Is Onboard With This Vision As Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet And Greer Childs DO DA DAMN THANG Now, Today In Da Republic Of Brooklyn, New York.”

The story behind She’s Gotta Have It focuses on Nola Darling, a woman in the tail end of her twenties that has a bit of a balancing act to overcome. She has to define herself on her own terms, but she is also distracted by her career as an artist in New York, her friends, and her three lovers (a trio of highly unique men).

As Lee noted in his statement, the independent movie She’s Gotta Have It signaled a lot of firsts for him. It was his first feature film, and now Spike Lee has accomplished enough to be considered one of the most notable names of our time. It will be interesting to see him go full circle as he directs and executive produces the half-hour series based on an idea he created three decades ago.
