Netflix Orders New Fantasy Series ‘Shadow And Bone’ from ‘Bird Box’ Writer

A new fantasy series Shadow and Bone has been ordered by Netflix from Eric Heisserer, the writer of Bird Box and Arrival.  The series will be produced by Shawn Levy, executive producer of Stranger Things, who signed a deal with Netflix through his production company 21 Laps.

The series is based on the bestselling novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, which are part of what is known as the “Grishaverse,” or the Grisha universe, where the story takes place. The series, adapted by Heisserer, will combine characters from both novels. In the story, the world is divided by never-ending darkness, where unearthly monsters devour human flesh. However, the heroin, a young soldier, holds the power to save her country from this perpetual nightmare. Not only must she battle against these monsters, but also overcome the struggle to refine her power and fight against thugs and assassins, who are battling it out with the saints.

Heisserer also wrote Arrival, which 21 Laps Entertainment produced, making this the second time the two will work together on a book adaptation. Heisserer’s adaptation of Bird Box was also based on the novel by Josh Malerman. For this reason, fans of  Bardugo’s work can expect that this adaptation will be in good hands. Bardugo shared her enthusiasm about the project in a tweet, stating, “This is real. Shadow & Bone AND Six of Crows are coming to @netflix. The #grishaverse is about to come to life.”Heisserer was equally as pleased to be working on the show, paying huge compliments to Bardugo in his tweet: “For years, my happy place has been in the pages of Leigh’s books. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to live there for a while. Oh this will be so much fun.”

Bardugo replied to Heisserer’s tweet, adding that although nervous about putting her work in someone else’s hands, she trusted Heisserer fully.

It is unclear if the show will continue into Bardugo’s other books based in the Grishaverse. King of Scars, the latest in the series, is set to hit the shelves later this month.
