Netflix Makes Offer for Weinstein Co. & Electus’ ‘Marco Polo’ Series

The Weinstein Co. and Electus’ new drama series, Marco Polo may move to Netflix, according to Deadline.

Originally Marco Polo was developed with Starz, who offered a 10-episode order in January 2012. Filming for the series was earlier slated to be in China but proved to be difficult. It is rumored the series will now be filmed in Malaysia.

Starz filled their schedule in the mean time, leaving no room for the explorer series. This is where Netflix stepped in and offered the historical drama a 9-episode order. There are seven episodes written as of now and it is reported casting will start immediately.

The series will tell the story of explorer Marco Polo during his youth, where he “finds himself at the center of a brutal war between two empires in 13th century China, replete with close combat, romance and sexual intrigue, religious tension, political skullduggery and spectacular battles.”

Marco Polo was created by John Fusco, famous for his writing in the hit film “Young Guns”. Co-showrunner will be Dave Erickson, producer of Sons of Anarchy.
