Netflix Lands Exclusive International Deal with CBS’s Upcoming ‘Star Trek’ Series

Soon Netflix is going to make every Star Trek TV series available for streaming worldwide.

Emphasis on “every.”

Today Variety announced that Netflix had just landed an exclusive deal with CBS Studios International which would allow the online streaming service to release the upcoming Star Trek series internationally. This exclusive licensing agreement will allow Netflix to stream the CBS’s new Star Trek project in 188 countries, but not in the U.S. or Canada. In the U.S., CBS has reserved the right to release the series and Bell Media will release it in Canada. Only internationally, each episode will be available on Netflix within 24 hours of the U.S. premiere.

Unfortunately for trekkies in the U.S. who already have a Netflix subscription, if you want to be able to catch the new Star Trek, you’ll have to get an additional CBS All Access membership.

Netflix’s plan is to also make every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise available world-wide by the end of this year.

About the new deal with Netflix, Armando Nunez, president and CEO, CBS Studios International, said, “The launch of the new Star Trek will truly be a global television event. Star Trek is a worldwide phenomenon and this international partnership will provide fans around the world, who have been craving a new series for more than a decade, the opportunity to see every episode virtually at the same time as viewers in the U.S. Thanks to our world-class partners at Netflix, the new Star Trek will definitely be ‘hailing on all frequencies’ throughout the planet.”

A previously reported, the rumor is that the new Star Trek might actually be an anthology-type series with each season following a new set of characters and plot. Each season would occur at different points along the Star Trek timeline. The first season has unofficially been reported to take place between the events of the last film to feature the original cast, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Production for CBS’s new Star Trek series is expected to start this September in Toronto and is projected to premiere in January 2017.

All Star Trek series are currently available to stream on both Hulu and Netflix in the U.S.
