Netflix’s adaptation of Shadow and Bone has released its first full trailer. The series is set to premiere on the streaming platform Friday, April 23, according to TVLine.
Shadow and Bone is the television adaption of Leigh Bardugo’s (author, Siege and Storm) book trilogy commonly referred to as the Grishaverse, as well as both of her Six of Crows novel, via TVLine. The series is set in the war-torn land of Ravka, where Alina Starkov has discovered an incredible power that could allow her country to prosper. However, threats from the Shadow Fold seperate Alina from the life she knows, forcing her to train with the Grisha, a group of elite magical soldiers.
Describing the series, Bargugo explained “Shadow and Bone takes place in a very different kind of fantasy world. Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords. It’s a story about the people who have been told how much they don’t matter proving how much they do. And it’s been incredible to see that story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the characters.” (TVLine)
Netflix promoted the series’ upcoming release through a tweet Tuesday morning.
According to TVLine, the Netflix series is set to consist of eight-episodes. There is no word yet on whether or not there will be a second season of the series, or if it will be a stand alone limited series.
Netflix has recently garnered success from their fantasy television adaptations including The Witcher and Fate: The Winx Saga. Shadow and Bone follows in the current streaming trend to adapt fantasy book series specifically, with Hulu recently announcing the upcoming adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
