Netflix Confirms Premiere Date For Season 2 of ‘The OA’

Per Deadline, Netflix has announced its mind-bending series, The OA, will return this year for a March 22nd premiere date.  Titled The OA Part II, the new season will follow OA as she navigates new dimensions — one in which she is a Russian heiress, and another where she is a helpless captive of Hap’s once again.

Part II will also introduce Karim Washington (Kingsley Ben-Adir) to fans, as a private detective that’s tasked with finding a missing teen named Michelle Vu. According to the trailer, he links up with the enigmatic OA as they try to follow the mystery behind Michelle’s disappearance. Eventually, leading them to a house that’s connected to the disappearances of several other teens.

Back in the first dimension, OA’s followers find themselves on a very personal journey in an attempt to understand the truth behind her story and the different dimensions she described throughout the show’s first season.

The original series followed Prairie Johnson after being declared missing for seven years, when she resurfaces with strange scars on her back. Upon her arrival, she requests to be called “The OA”, and can suddenly see again after previously being blind.

After refusing to speak to anyone besides a group of high schoolers and one of their teachers, she begins to convince them that she can save several local missing children with their help. Although they eventually succeed in their mission, they incur casualties and witness right in front of them, the disappearance of OA to another dimension.

The series was quickly picked up by Netflix after a multiple-network bidding war and subsequently went into production by March 5, 2015. The series’ eight episode order being part of a deal between the streaming giant, Brad Pitt’s Plan B, and Anonymous Content.

Since then, the series has gained a serious cult following despite being divisive amongst critics and has gained favorable and unfavorable comparisons to Netflix’s other original series, Stranger Things. Despite this, The OA‘s second season was spearheaded by Netflix for a January 2018 start for production.
