Netflix Cast Lena Headey for ‘The Abandons’ Drama Series by Kurt Sutter

It was recently announced that Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, 300) was cast for Netflix’s upcoming drama series, The Abandons. According to Deadline, she would star as Fiona, the matriarch of her nuclear family.

The show was created and developed by Kurt Sutter (The Shield, Sons of Anarchy). In this story, “a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land. via. Deadline.

In that same article, the Game of Thrones and 300 actress would be playing the role of Fiona, who is a strong, devout matriarch who oversees her four adopted children. She exhibits a tough Irish temper and would protect her family at all costs. Headey is a Five-time Emmy Award nominee and her most well-known role is that of Cersei Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones. 

Her upcoming roles include HBO’s White House Plumbers as Dorothy Hunt; the Spectrum and AMC sci-fi drama, Beacon 23; Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake; and she did voice acting on The Dark Crystal: Age of ResistanceDC League of Super-Pets and Infinity Train. via. The Hollywood Reporter.

The Abandons would have Sutter as the showrunner and writer for the series. Sutter would also serve as an executive producer through his Sutterink banner. He would be joined by Stephen Surjik (The Umbrella Academy, The Punisher) and Emmy Grinwis (Snowfall, The Fall of the House of Usher) as executive producers. Surjik would also direct and would be joined by Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror), who serves as prototype director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be Sutter’s first project since he was fired from the Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC from FX. It was reported that the reason for his departure was due to his misconduct in 2019. He co-created Mayans M.C. with Elgin James (The Outlaws, In the Shadow of the Mountain) and was dismissed for the same reason.

As of now, there are no details regarding release date, casting, or how many episodes were ordered. Many speculate though that The Abandons would be released in early 2024. More would be reported on when more details come out later in the year.
