After Netflix renewed Bloodline in July for its third season, it seemed as if the show would be safe for few more seasons. However, that’s no longer the case as Netflix announced that the upcoming third season will be the last, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The amount of episodes for the third season has also been decreased from the original 13 episodes to 10 episodes.
The news of the cancellation comes as somewhat of a shock, considering Netflix rarely cancels its own shows (the Norwegian drama Lilyhammer and Hemlock Grove were both canceled after their third seasons), making Bloodline one of the first original Netflix shows to be canceled.
What’s even stranger about the cancellation is that when Netflix renewed the show for its third season, the streaming giant said it most likely wouldn’t be the last season of the show.
The cancellation also comes after Florida cut their entertainment tax incentives program, which would make it more expensive to make movies and television shows in the state, which could be another reason the show was canceled, as filming takes place in Florida.
Show creators Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler said they originally planned for Bloodline to be a five or six season show, with Zelman saying “We’re doing a TV series, so even in our own mind, we’re asking ourselves, ‘Does this series have seasons in it?’ When we pitched it and we thought about it, we were thinking five to six seasons down the line because we wanted to make sure it could hold that much material. So we certainly have ideas for where everything could go and hopefully where everything will go.”
Some of the stars in the show include Kyle Chandler as police officer son John Rayburn, Linda Cardellini as attorney daughter Meg Rayburn, Ben Mendelsohn as Danny Rayburn, the black sheep of the family, and Sissy Spacek as the family matriarch Sally Rayburn.
The first season of the show was well-received by critics, but the second season received much more mixed praise from critics.
For the show’s first two seasons, Chandler and Mendelsohn have both been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, respectively. Neither won for the first season, but with the Primetime Emmy Awards taking place on Sunday, Sept. 18, it’s possible that one or both of them could be the winner in their category.
The final season of Bloodline will be released for streaming in 2017. Sony Pictures Television, who also produces the show along with Netflix, hasn’t announced if they plan on shopping the show around to other networks or streaming services as a way to continue the series.
