According to Variety, Netflix and Blizzard Entertainment announced an animated series in the works for the popular video game franchise Diablo. The Diablo franchise is set in a dark world of Sanctuary, where humanity is caught in a conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
As per Variety, Blizzard’s official description of the project: “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.”
Variety reports Diablo is a video game franchise that launched in 1996, with this year being its 30th anniversary. The most recent game in the franchise is Diablo IV, which came out in 2023. The franchise has a total of five games over the course of the last 30 years.
According to Variety, the development of the animated series was announced by Blizzard president Johanna Faries during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday. The two day event which is the first BlizzCon since Microsoft closed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, is celebration of all things Blizzard Entertainment. This includes game franchises like Diablo, World of Warcraft and Overwatch.
“BlizzCon in and of itself represents so much for all of us to be able to shine a light on all the great work going on at Blizzard,” Faries told Variety in an interview ahead of the event. “We have put a lot of thought into this moment, and why now, and how do we continue to capture and build on the momentum we’re experiencing as an organization.”
