Fans of The Walking Dead universe can rejoice because Netflix and AMC have come to an agreement to renew the streaming rights of all the franchise series for five years. The agreement came to around $500 million dollars.
For those who don’t know, The Walking Dead is a series centered around a Sheriff Deputy named Rick Grimes who wakes up from a coma and quickly learns that world has fallen into ruin and the dead walking among the living and must lead a group of survivors to salvation. However, the task will not be easy because the dead are not the only concern for Rick and company, for he must also deal with people who have fallen into darkness and wish to cause harm to Rick and the people he cares about.
The original series debuted on Halloween in 2010, and had ran for 11 seasons and was able to amass a huge amount of views. With the success of the series, AMC decided the next course of action would be to expand the universe through a series of spinoffs. Such spinoffs would include: Fear The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of The Walking Dead.
According to Deadline, the deal will go into effect on AMC+ starting next year. The Netflix Vice President of Licensing, Lori Conkling, issued this statement regarding the agreement: “Audiences have discovered and loved The Walking Dead on Netflix for nearly 15 years and the show continues to attract new fans,” said Lori Conkling, Vice President of Licensing at Netflix. “We’re excited to partner with AMC Global Media to continue to expand that access to more audiences around the world and bring the entirety of The Walking Dead Universe to Netflix.”
In the meantime, you can watch the third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City on AMC. The rest of the spinoffs and the original series can be streamed on Netflix and AMC+.
