Netflix Adapts Novels ‘Geek Girl’ to Series About Neurodiverse Teen

Netflix’s next young adult series comes from Holly Smale’s novel series Geek Girl into a ten part series that is set to begin filming later this year, according to Deadline. The novel follows the story of Harriet Manners, a socially awkward 15 year old English girl with a limited circle of friends, a supermodel boyfriend and who is the target of the school bully.

The official logline reads: “Geek Girl tells the story of awkward, neurodiverse teenager Harriet Manners whose life is turned upside down when she is spotted to be a model and embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery as she balances high school and high fashion,” via Deadline

Geek Girl will be made by UK drama company RubyRock Pictures, founded by Zoë Rocha who is known for producing Moone Boy, alongside Canada’s Aircraft Pictures and Waterside Studios from writer and producer Jeff Norton (The Small Hand (Ghost Story), Trucktown), according to Deadline

Along with the Geek Girl series, Smale is known for writing Love Me Not, Happy Girl Lucky, Far From Perfect, and Cassandra in Reverse. Smale’s work revolves around young women as they work through life’s many problems.

Smale’s Geek Girl novels are published under HarperCollins, and have been translated into over 30 languages, according to Deadline. Netflix has not released a set cast for the series or an international premiere date.
