Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) is slated to appear in BBC’s upcoming installment of Doctor Who, according to Deadline. While his official character has yet to be revealed, Harris will be featured alongside new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) and Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper), as well as recurring stars David Tennant (Good Omens) and Catherine Tate (The Office).
The classic series centers around The Doctor, who time travels through time and space to save people in need. Having originated in 1963, the series has had several Doctors – the last being Jodie Whittaker (Venus). Harris will reportedly appear in the series as its newest villain, as he implied in an Instagram post, “Never looked more dashing . . . I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does…Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!”
Doctor Who is currently filming in Wales, and is set to air in 2023 in conjunction with its 60th anniversary. Showrunner Russell T. Davies (It’s A Sin) referred to Harris’ character has the “greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced,” according to Deadline.
“It’s my huge honor to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris…but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware,” Davies added.
