NBC Orders ‘Non-Evil Twin’ Pilot and Brings on Amber Ruffin to Produce and Star in the Comedy

According to Deadline, NBC picked up an order for the comedy pilot Non-Evil Twin. The show was written and produced by Amber Ruffin (Key and Peele, Late Night with Seth Meyers) and the showrunner would be Kenny Smith (Hustle, The Pathway).

The multi-cam show would be about a woman who begrudgingly takes over her sister’s Fortune 500 company. She does this not knowing the ins and outs of the organization nor how her sister used to run it, leading to a plot filled with mystery and intrigue. The comedy pilot is the first for Ruffin as she wrote for her time on the Late Night with Seth Meyers as well as her own show, The Amber Ruffin Show.

Besides Ruffin and Smith, the show would also bring on other notable executive producers, such as Jenny Hagel (Crafty, Tech Support) and Olivia Charmaine Morris (American Dad!, The Last O.G.). According to Variety, all of them struck a deal with Universal Television in 2021 with Ruffin, Hagel, and Morris signing a deal with their company, Straight to Cards, and Smith coming in with an overall deal in the fall of 2021.

It is the latest comedy to be issued a pilot under NBC for that current season as they also have St. Denis Medical, a mockumentary-style workplace comedy from Justin Spitzer (Scrubs, Courting Alex), Eric Ledgin (WordGirl, The Funniest Movie Ever… Just Kidding) and Simon Heuer (American Auto, St. Denis Medical).

Speculations can be made about the show as some propose theories on the possible storyline. It might come to light that the evil twin might be the protagonist in a twist, or that it’s a classic deal with the devil from the opposite end of the same coin. Whatever this pilot holds for its viewers, it would certainly garner laughs from the dynamic of Ruffin and her crew. More details will be reported as time goes on.
