In case you’ve been living under a rock, NBC announced back in January that our favorite foursome on Will & Grace is being welcomed back to the small screen. Originally revived for a 10-episode season, NBC has just ordered an additional two episodes, bringing the total to 12 episodes, Deadline reports.
Warming hearts and talking about privates since 1998, Will & Grace was a prime-time staple on the NBC network. Revolving around Will Truman, a gay lawyer and gal pal Grace Adler, an interior designer, the friendly couple navigate the New York City dating scene, their careers, marriage, and divorce, with a blast of comedy, supported by their flamboyant best friend and struggling actor Jack McFarland and Karen Walker, an alcoholic socialite.
The cast and crew saw an opportunity during the election cycle last fall to take advantage of the small screen by releasing an election-themed video on YouTube titled ‘Vote Honey‘, convincing viewers to vote for Hilary Clinton, (while Karen supported Donald Trump). Following millions of views and an outcry for the shows return on social media, the cast and crew were approached by NBC to revive the Emmy-nominated series.
Debra Messing (Grace Adler) told E! News, “NBC didn’t even know we were doing it, but then the phone call came and the four of us got together and had dinner and looked around the table and we were like, ‘What do you think?’ and we all unanimously felt we needed to laugh and we wanted more than anything to make other people laugh right now with the state of our country, the state of our world, the chaos, the fear and the confusion. We thought, you know what, we have so much to say in the only way we can say it, which is always putting the funny first but also always commenting on what is happening in politics and pop culture and social norms.”
While the cast and crew haven’t given too much detail on the revival, the show begins filming in August, and may have a few hurdles to jump. The series finale flashed forward to the future showing Will & Grace connecting for the first time in 18 years, while moving their own kids into college dorm rooms of the same college. “I’ve been assured by our brilliant show creators that they have very quickly and magically created a universe in which we’re all back together.” But, what about Grace’s mother? Messing reassures they will “absolutely” pay tribute to the late Debbie Reynolds who played her mother for nine years on the show.
NBCUniversal recently kicked off its upfront campaign including new TV spots, featuring the Will & Grace cast, front and center.
