Idris Elba and Freida Pinto’s Showtime Series ‘Guerilla’ Gets International Distribution

It seems that Showtime’s upcoming limited series Guerrilla is getting even more attention than many had anticipated. At MIPTV this week, the series secured distribution in various foreign territories across Europe, showing that all the hype may have been justified for this period drama series.

With HBO being the primary buyer, HBO Europe picked up the series for various central and eastern European countries. HBO Espana secured the rights for Spain, and HBO Nordics for Scandinavian countries. BBC Worldwide will show the series on the premium Australian channel BBC First.

Written and co-directed by Oscar-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave), the series follows a pair of activists named Kent (Elba) and Jas Mitra (Pinto) living in 1970s London who determined to free a political prisoner, start a resistance group as part of the Black Power movement. There are six one-hour episodes in the limited series, which were ordered by Showtime nearly a year ago. Along with stars Elba and Pinto, the cast includes Daniel Mays, Rory Kinnear, Bella Dayne, Zawe Ashton, and Patrick Gibson.

A US/UK co-prodcution, US production companies ABC Signature Studios and Stearns Castle served as producers, along with Fifty Fathoms Productions and Elba’s production company Green Door Pictures.

According to an article in Variety, Ridley said the following in April 2016, when the show was initially picked up:

I am both humbled by and impressed with Idris’s passion toward bringing this story to life. I share his commitment for populating the culture with driven and complicated people of color, and believe we have great partners on the producorial level, and with our broadcasters Sky Atlantic and Showtime.

During production of the series, Ridley was also working on the third season of ABC’s American Crime, which premiered last month, as well as a two-hour documentary for ABC News called Let It Fall, honoring the 25th anniversary of the L.A. riots, due out April 28th.

Elba can be seen this year in Thor: Ragnarok, as well as The Mountain Between Us with Kate Winslet, and The Dark Tower with Matthew McConaughey. Meanwhile, Pinto can be seen next in Andy Serkis’ film adaptation Jungle Book, as well as Love Sonia with Demi Moore (along with little Sunny Pawar from Lion!)

Look for Guerrilla on Showtime on Easter, Sunday April 16th.
