Many 90’s kids remember this star on their television screens. George Lopez (Rio, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl) is a face many recognize for late night sitcoms even to this day. More recently, he created another show in 2022 aptly named Lopez Vs. Lopez. After airing on NBC for seventeen episodes, the final three for this season would be placed in the slot right before Night Court, via. Deadline.
This new show has a similar formula to Lopez’s previous late-night gig in George Lopez (2002) where it’s styled with multi-cams and many jokes. Lopez Vs. Lopez follows George and his daughter, Mayan (Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie, Mr. Troop Mom) as they learn to deal with each other after George moves in. They will work to repair their relationship after George became estranged for most of Maya’s adolescence. In that time, other members of the family would also chime in to interact with both of them in hilarious fashion.
George serves as an executive producer under Travieso Productions along with Mayan. Debby Wolfe (One Day at a Time, Love, Victor) joins him as an executive producer and the show’s showrunner via Mi Vida Loba. They are also joined by Bruce Helford (Roseanne, The Connors) from Mohawk Productions as well as Katie Newman (Sugar Rush, Primeval) and Michael Rotenberg (Office Space, Reign Over Me) from 3 Arts. They all work with Universal Television to produce the sitcom, via. Variety.
Besides George and Mayan, the main cast includes Selenis Leyva (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Orange Is the New Black), Brice Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie), Matt Shively (The Real O’Neals, Paranormal Activity 4) and Al Madrigal (Physical, Morbius). They are also joined by Laci Mosley (Insecure, Hacking High School), Aparna Nancherla (Mythic Quest, Crashing), Liz Torres (Gilmore Girls, The John Larroquette Show), Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day, Thelma and Louise), and Momo Rodriguez (Mayans M.C., La Chamba) as recurring cast members and even had guest stars such as Camila Cabello (Cinderella, The Fate of the Furious) and Cheech Marin (From Dusk Till Dawn, Up In Smoke).
NBC is moving the series to Tuesday nights at 8:30pm for its final three episodes. They will replace American Auto’s slot after it ended its second season. This new scheduling will take effect on April 25. According to Deadline, this will give Lopez vs. Lopez the opportunity to lead in NBC’s revival of the popular comedy, Night Court. This is cited to help boost more ratings for Lopez Vs. Lopez as it concludes its first season.
From that same article, the show averages a 0.83 in the 18-49 demographic, up nearly 200% from live + same day viewing and is the highest-indexing broadcast series for English-dominant Hispanic households. The pilot is up to a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and nearly 10 million viewers across all platforms, via. Deadline.
For many who stayed up watching Nick at Nite, you don’t have to stay up too late after your workday. Lopez Vs. Lopez is now airing on NBC on Tuesdays at 8:30pm EST from its previous Fridays at 8:00pm EST. New episodes will then be available to stream on Peacock. You can watch the trailer for Lopez Vs.
