Natasha Lyonne Talks About Possible Season Three of ‘Russian Doll’

According to ScreenRant, Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black, Glass Onion, Slums of Beverly Hills), leading role and co-creator of the time-twisting Netflix series Russian Doll, talks about the likelihood of a third season of the series. After its initial release in 2019, (One day ahead of Groundhog Day; teasing the “original” time loop film), fans and audiences had nothing but positive feedback giving way to its second season in 2022, following Lyonne’s character, Nadia, experiencing her Jewish heritage in times of struggle.

So if the show were to be picked up for another season, what would the story be like? Fans ponder questions like what happens to Nadia’s time anomaly companion Alan, played by Charlie Barnett (YOU, Chicago Fire, The Happy Sad); what happens to the baby that happens to be her mother; and why is there a problem with the two characters in the space-time continuum?

Lyonne addressed these concerns in an interview on THR‘s Awards Chatter podcast. She does confirm that she will probably reprise her role as the chain-smoking coder, but currently has higher priorities like working on her first feature film as well as her current murder-mystery series, Poker Face, which just got renewed for a second season on Peacock.

Lyonne said, “I think that there’s potentially more than that in the future. But I think it’s gonna take some time. I think that like, you know, it’s just like a crazy time in this business. I think, for me, my priority right now is directing a feature. A priority for me over a season three of Russian Doll. I think, also, now we’re on the kind of Poker Face train. I think Russian Doll would have done better to be considered a limited series, because I think that’s always how we envisioned it. And, actually, the second season is very similar to what was actually pitched, which was like, she goes, you know, she becomes her mother.”

She continued, stating, “I just think that the nature of like, COVID, and the four-year split, and… so what I think is great, I’ve sort of gotten into the business of playing these kind of ageless characters who could be whatever. I don’t think that it would be a problem for Nadia to be like, you know, 60 arriving on the scene. Having some sort of, like, New Yorkers’ problems. I don’t know that it’s, like, my next order of business. But I don’t think that, sort of, philosophically, Russian Doll is something that I’ll ever be done with. So, I think I’ll always—you know, life finds a way. And so does death, my friend.”

Even though it might be a while and isn’t currently Lyonne’s top priority,  the possibility of another iteration of Russian Doll, is likely to be released in the foreseeable future. The first two seasons of Russian Doll following the messed-up lives of Nadia and Alan, are currently streamable on Netflix.
