Natalie Dormer Set to Star in Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’

Natalie Dormer has been set to star in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels series as Magda. Dormer is famous for her roles as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, Showtime’s hit drama, and as Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones. She also played in other less mainstream series, such as Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Scandalous Lady Woman and Elementary. In the movie scene, Dormer both co-wrote and starred in the film In Darkness, a psychological thriller. Her other film credits include The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2, The Riot Club, Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and upcoming roles in adaptations of the films The Professor and the Madman and The Dark Crystal.

In the new chapter of the Penny Dreadful saga, Dormer’s character Magda, who is a supernatural demon, has the power of shapeshifting and can change her shape into other people. Magda’s character is both charismatic and clever, making her an extremely dangerous foe but powerful ally.

In contrast to the Victorian London setting of the original Penny Dreadful series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in Los Angeles in the year 1938. In the wake of a gruesome murder, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) becomes entangled in a tale that weaves the history of Los Angeles with Mexican-American folklore. Other historic events that will make their way into the series are the Third Reich and radio evangelism. In the course of his findings, Tiago and his family face forces that could tear them apart. Both supernatural and historic reality are combined to create a unique plotline and characters. Along with Dormer, some of the other new stars in the lineup include Jessica Garza (The Purge) and Johnathan Nieves (New Amsterdam).

John Logan, creator, writer, and executive producer of the show, has won the Tony® and Golden Globe®  awards and has been nominated for the Oscar’s three times. Michael Aguilar (Kidding) and Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) will also executive produce the show, which is set to begin production this year.
