MTV Announces Six Reboots Including ‘Daria’

MTV has announced that they are going to reboot the animated sitcom Daria, and the remake’s title will be Daria & Jodie. Grace Edwards will be writing the script for the series. She has worked on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Inside Amy Schumer, as well as others. According to the description for the new series it will be, “reinvented through the eyes of heroine Daria Morgendorffer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon. These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.”

Daria and Jodie will address the world by deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender, and race through a satirical voice. The original Daria was actually a spinoff from Mike Judge’s version of Beavis and Butt-Head. The series lasted for five seasons on MTV from 1997-2002.

MTV is starting MTV Studios. The idea of the studio is to bring back classic hits, and MTV has thirty-five years worth of content. This is also huge push by Viacom brands (which include MTV, Nickelodeon, and others) to help become a full studio. For instance, some of the shows that are being rebooted are Daria, The Real World, and Aeon Flux. There is also an unscripted show called Made, The Real World, and two original docu-series.

MTV president Chris McCarthy stated, “Things that are in the animation space, things that are in pure music longform, things that are in the teen and high school space — those are the things that we’re going to be looking more in the SVOD space. The traditional amplified and louder versions of unscripted reality, we’re going to continue to focus on that in cable.”

According to Deadline, MTV Studios has released promos for six projects all being produced by MTV Studios. Here are the promos for each show and details about the projects from its launch slate which are: Daria & Jodie, Aeon Flux, The Real World, Made, The Valley, and MTV’s Straight Up Ghosted.

As of right now, Daria & Jodie, The Real World, and Aeon Flux are all being pitched to streaming platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and Apple.
