According to Deadline, the Amazon MGM Studios‘ adaptation of the bestselling novel Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (Onyx Storm, Iron Flame) may be getting a new big-name showrunner. Jac Schaeffer (Agatha All Along, WandaVision) signed a deal with the studio, and will potentially join the high-profile romantic fantasy series project as executive producer, writer, and showrunner.
Schaeffer will succeed Moira Walley-Beckett (Flesh and Bone, Anne with an E), who recently departed after being tapped to pen the adaptation last July. Deadline states that Schaeffer is among the top names in consideration for the job, meanwhile no decision for showrunner has been made as of now.
Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, Memento) and Lisa Joy (Westworld, Reminiscence)’s Amazon MGM Studios-based Kilter Films (The Peripheral, Fallout) has joined Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Sinners)’s Outlier Society, marking a new addition to the Fourth Wing producing team. The Outlier Society has been on board since Amazon MGM Studios gained the rights to The Empyrean book series in 2023, along with Premediated Productions, Deadline adds.
A rep for Amazon MGM Studios has refused to comment, Deadline notes.
The Empyrean follows a planned five-book series with Fourth Wing (2023), Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025) as the first three titles. The story depicts Violet Sorrengail, a 20 years old who leaves her life as a Scribe behind because of her mother’s demand that she becomes a dragon rider. She follows the orders of her mother, a General in the military of Navarre, and Violet entering the harsh ranks of Basgiath War College, a place that trains riders through the Graduate or Die method, via Deadline.
Fourth Wing has spent a total of 88 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 18 of which were at #1, as mentioned by Deadline.
Schaeffer was a creator, executive producer, and writer on Marvel’s WandaVision and spinoff Agatha All Along, Deadline states. Agatha All Along is in the 2025 Emmy contention and WandaVision was Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, as well as earning Schaeffer writing Emmy and WGA Award nominations.
Recently, Schaeffer directed and executive produced the pilot for Disney+’s Holes reboot. She is repped by Curate, CAA, attorney Erik Hyman., Deadline adds.
