Speaking with Deadline ahead of the season finale, Mindy Kaling (The Office, Never Have I Ever) explained why the series consists of nine episodes instead of the more common eight- or 10-episode streaming format. She said the structure was inspired by Danny McBride’s (The Righteous Gemstones, Eastbound & Down) approach on The Righteous Gemstones, which launched with an hour-long pilot followed by half-hour episodes.
The comedy, which follows a group of twenty-somethings navigating careers, friendships, and relationships in New York City, was originally titled Murray Hill when it was first sold to Hulu. The name referenced the Manhattan neighborhood where the main characters live.
Deadline notes Hulu executive Craig Erwich encouraged a title change to ensure audiences immediately recognized the series as a comedy with the same energy as some of her previous projects. The series eventually became Not Suitable For Work, or NSFW.
Kaling admitted she understands why some viewers question the title, noting that the show contains little sexual content despite the suggestive name. However, she said she believes titles often take on a life of their own once audiences connect with a series.
The creator also addressed comparisons between Not Suitable For Work and Friends. Both series center on young adults living in neighboring New York apartments while balancing careers, friendships, and romance. Kaling said she welcomes the comparison, describing herself as a longtime fan of Friends.
According to Deadline, she argued that Not Suitable For Work explores a different question. While Friends focused on how friendships become a chosen family, Kaling said her series examines what happens when friends are also coworkers, competitors, and romantic interests.
Kaling also defended criticism that the characters’ apartments appear too expensive for their jobs, noting that two of the show’s central characters work as investment bankers and could realistically afford their living situation.
As for a potential second season, Kaling joked that she may need to make the show live up to its title by adding more romance if Hulu renews the series. For now, however, she remains focused on the friendships and ambitions that drive the show’s story.
