Actress Millie Gibson (Coronation Street, Jamie Johnson) has joined the cast of Doctor Who as the new companion. Her character is called Ruby Sunday and will travel through time and space with Ncuti Gatwa’s (Sex Education, The Last Ketter from Your Lover) Doctor, according to Deadline.
She will debut in the Doctor Who universe with the Fifteenth Doctor during the holidays in 2023. Gibson has said that role is a dream come true and that she will do everything to try and fill the boots of her fellow companions that have come before her.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies (It’s a Sin, Torchwood) has called Gibson a “star” as he works to set a new cast for the next generation, as well as the devoted fans of the show who will continue to watch the latest iteration of the iconic character, according to Deadline.
It was also previously announced that Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper) has also joined the cast of Doctor Who and will play the character of Rose Temple-Noble. According to the official Doctor Who site, she is scheduled to appear in the episodes airing during the show’s 60th anniversary in 2023.
The show’s latest episode left fans wondering what is going to happen next as David Tennant (Jessica Jones, Broadchurch) has made a triumphant return to Doctor Who playing the Fourteenth Doctor. The episode was a special release during the BBC’s centenary special and marked the end of Jodie Whittaker’s (Broadchurch, Journeyman) turn as the Doctor.
Days later, it was announced that Doctor Who had found a new streaming home with Disney+ and the BBC announcing a new partnership. From now on, new Doctor Who episodes will stream on Disney+ worldwide while remaining on the BBC channel in the United Kingdom and in Ireland.
Doctor Who is a sci-fi show about an alien called The Doctor that travels through time and space in his TARDIS. The Doctor spends quite a bit of time saving the Earth from alien attacks. The show has been airing since 1963 with William Hartnell (Carry On Sergeant, Escape) playing the Doctor back then. Since that first episode, there have been fifteen different actors interpreting the Doctor with Gatwa being the latest to interpret this iconic role.
New episodes of Doctor Who will premiere during the show’s 60th anniversary in November 2023. Older seasons of Doctor Who starring Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World, The A Word), Tennant, Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, Morbius), Peter Capaldi (Suicide Squad, The Thick of It), and Whittaker are available to stream on HBO Max and Amazon Prime.
