According to a new article on Deadline, William Jackson Harper (The Good Place, Love Life) has been casted as a lead in MGM+’s anthology series titled American Hostage. Other leads include Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Your Friends & Neighbors) and Mireille Enos (The Killing, The Catch) and the series is co-created and executive produced by Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit) and Eileen Myers (Last Resort, Dark Blue).
Deadline writes that the series is an eight-episode psychological thriller set in the 1970s. The series is based on the first season of the eponymous scripted podcast, and Hamm will be reprising his role from the podcast, which is Fred Heckman, Indianapolis radio reporter. Fred must grapple with life or death when Tony Kiritsis, who holds him hostage, demands that Fred allow him to be interviewed on his radio program.
On the other hand, Harper will be a series regular, playing Ben Hairston. He is Fred’s mentee at the radio station, who began to work at WIBC radio with Fred after spending some time as a newspaper reporter. Deadline writes that Ben is “respected and liked, good at his job, clever.” As his mentor becomes unable to properly do his job due to the hostage situation, Ben struggles with the internal battle of deciding whether or not he should take over Fred’s job for him due to concerns with journalistic integrity.
According to Deadline, Harper’s role as Chidi Anagonye from NBC’s The Good Place earned him an Emmy nomination. Later on, he also starred in the second season of HBO Max’s Love Life. His more recent roles include starring in Netflix’s limited series titled A Man In Full. He also worked on Broadway in Uncle Vanya, which earned him a Tony nomination. His next role is a recurring role in the fourth season of Apple TV’s The Morning Show.
