Comic fans had to wait as Marvel announcements were held for the latter half of Disney’s four-hour Investors Day presentation. According to Deadline, the jam-packed preview of future Marvel titles included brand new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision. The COVID-19 delayed series starring Elizabeth Olsen (Wind River, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Paul Bettany (Uncle Frank, A Beautiful Mind) will premiere on January 15. The show also stars Kathryn Hahn (I Know This Much Is True, Crossing Jordan), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat, Veep), Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls, Thor), and Teyonah Parris (Candyman, Chi-Raq). According to Deadline, WandaVision is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which the heroes defeated the villainous titan Thanos. However, their victory came at cast as Bettany’s Vision was presumed dead after Thanos removed the Mind Stone from his being in Avengers: Infinity War. This fact explains the somewhat fractured reality Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff and Vision are calling home. In the trailer, the couple’s life is depicted as living in the suburbia of yesteryear. The two Marvel heroes are portrayed as various classic sitcom couples. From Rob and Laura of The Dick Van Dyke Show to Samantha and Darren of Bewitched, the series looks to travel through TV land time. One of the episodes will even mimic NBC comedy The Office. But just like Vision opines in the trailer, something is amiss.
For starters, memories of their lives before these events are blurred. There are uncertainties as to how they were married and their current future as new parents. Even Parris’s character who has been revealed as adult Monica Rambeau has no recollection of her identity. The trailer continues with visible glitches to their world as if they are part of an old VHS recording. Wanda begins to hear voices calling to her as if she’s in distress. Soon a fleet of military-grade tanks and federal officials are shown descending upon the neighborhood. Wanda and Vision resolve they must defend their home from the pending threat.
According to Deadline, WandaVision is directed by Matt Shakman (Cut Bank, Just the Ten of Us). The head writer is Jac Shaeffer (Timer, The Hustle). It is the first of Marvel’s slate of Disney+ series to debut next year. Future premieres include Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.
