Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Announces Eighteen-Episode First Season at Disney+

Marvel Studios brought Hall H to its feet at Comic-Con this past weekend. One of the many announcements spanning across animation, TV, and film was the confirmation of a new Daredevil series at Disney+. Variety reports the new season will consist of 18 episodes. At this point in time, 18 is the most episodes any Marvel series season has received, with only one show given a second season.

Titled Daredevil: Born Again, the new show will star Charlie Cox (Stardust) who held the role for three seasons in Netflix’s Marvel show, Daredevil. Cox also appeared in the crossover team-up miniseries, The Defenders, which saw him partner with three other Netflix Marvel heroes: Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.

The show takes its title from the 1986 comic run from Frank Miller (Sin City) and David Mazzucchelli (City of Glass) in which Daredevil faces one of his darkest bouts with archnemesis, Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. Not much is known about the show as of now, but Cox will be reunited with Vincent D’Onofrio (Godfather of Harlem) who portrayed Wilson Fisk in the 2015 series for two seasons. D’Onofrio also recently reprised his role as the larger-than-life villain in the Disney+ show, Hawkeye.

Debuting in 2015, Netflix’s Daredevil saw Cox as Matthew Murdock, a blind attorney who begins his own independent firm in Hell’s Kitchen. As he fights low-grade civil suits by day, Murdock secretly fights seedier crime-doers by night as the Man Without Fear, Daredevil. With his heightened senses and fierce acrobatic fighting style, he battles underground mob bosses and corrupt city officials who orchestrate in plain sight. The series’ main villain, pulled from the comics, was Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, a wealthy philanthropist with a twisted sense of justice to clean up the crime-infested streets of New York City.

After three seasons, Daredevil was canceled along with the four other solo Marvel hero series, including The Punisher. The shows were cut short as Disney sought the rights of the characters with their purchase of Marvel. Fast forward to 2021,  Cox’s Daredevil officially returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the third Tom Holland (Cherry) Spider-Man entry, No Way Home. With rumors swirling of the potential for an official reboot of the show, news broke in March that a series would begin production.

While Variety lists the show’s release date for Spring 2024, fans can see Cox’s Daredevil in action very soon. The character’s quick cameo in the newest She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer confirms he will appear in the series set to premiere on August 17th. Cox will later continue the role in the animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year and in the future Echo show set for 2023.
