Last week there was a shooting on the set of FX’s Justified: City Primeval, a spin-off of FX’s Justified. According to Deadline, the series is produced by both Sony Pictures and FX Productions, who have currently increased protection on the set of Justified: City Primeval in Chicago.
According to Deadline, no one was injured during the shooting on July 21st of car occupants who engaged in a gunfight that invaded the show’s barricades. The incident occurred near Douglass Park in Chicago. Although no one was reported as injured, the series star who played U.S. Marshal Raylan, Timothy Olyphant (Hitman), was present during the shooting.
The shooting on the set of Justified: City Primeval was not the only set shooting that has occurred recently. On July 19th, Deadline reported that on the set of Law & Order: Organized Crime, there was fatal shooting on the soundstages of Broadway Stages in Brooklyn, New York. The parking enforcement worker Johnny Pizarro was shot multiple times on the scene and was pronounced dead early the following day.
Regarding the shooting on the Chicago set of Justified: City Primeval, Sony Pictures has taken action. According to Deadline, they have added security team trained in high-threat situations, there have been shuttles put into place for local crew members who don’t want to drive to set, and the crew will be working on reassessing their safety plans. There was a larger push for these plans as the production site for Chicago Med was also hit with multiple bullets within the Chicago area, according to Deadline.
There are only a few more weeks left of filming for the short series. However, this incident is the only one that has occurred recently—raising attention to the more significant current issue of gun violence on production sets that is going overlooked.
Once filming in complete the short series will follow Marshal Raylan Givens as he leaves Kentucky and is living in Miami. Marshal will have to balance his life with his young daughter Willa while dealing with a a violent sociopath along the way. The series is based the a new chapter in the Elmore Lenoard’s (Raylan) novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit.
