Marvel Television To Officially Shut Down

Marvel Television, the studio behind series like DaredevilLegion, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to officially cease operations. The move comes after an announcement in October that production for Marvel’s live action shows would shift from that studio to Disney’s Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios is the entity behind the company’s blockbuster film franchises like The Avengers and Black Panther. It is also behind plethora of extravagantly funded television shows bound for Disney+.

The only live-action show still in production at Marvel Television is Helstrom, which is set to debut on Hulu in 2020. The studio is also producing animated series MODOKHoward the the DuckHit-Monkey, and Tigra and Dazzler for Hulu.

The decision to shutter the studio was proceeded by the cancellation of several productions with homes outside of Disney’s new streaming service. In November, it was announced that Hulu’s Marvel’s Runaways would not see renewal beyond its upcoming third season. Prior to that, a Ghost Rider series for Hulu was scrapped, Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger was cancelled, and slate of shows for Netflix that included titles like Jessica JonesLuke Cage, and The Punisher was axed. In the midst of all of this, it was announced that Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Television, would be stepping down from his position at the company. Variety reports that Loeb’s departure will be delayed, with the executive producer set to stay with Marvel Television as its operations are transferred to Marvel Studios.

As Marvel Television winds down for good, Marvel Studios is currently developing a lineup that includes Ms. MarvelWandavisionFalcon and Winter Soldier, and LokiEach is set to air on Disney+ in either 2020 or 2021. The Studio has announced plan to interweave the storylines from these upcoming shows with those from its movies, blurring the lines between mediums.
