Marvel Studios dropped a two-minute video on YouTube in preparation for the June 21 premiere of Secret Invasion on Disney+. The featurette, available below, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the thriller and sits down with several cast members who discuss both their characters and the meaning of the show.
Secret Invasion follows long-time MCU character Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight), as he takes on a faction of Skrulls.
Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Safe Heaven), who will be reprising her role as Fury’s ally Maria Hill, begins the opening sequence of the teaser. She says of her character: “When we start Secret Invasion, Nick Fury has been off planet and Maria Hill has just really been trying to you know, maintain order. But this current threat is getting out of control.”
She adds that we “jump into Nick Fury’s world, which is very spy versus spy.”
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Last Christmas) also shares this perspective. She explains, “This idea of who can you trust? That is really the heart of the show.” Clarke will be entering the MCU for the first time, portraying G’iah, the daughter of the Skrull, Talos.
Talos is played by Ben Mendolsohn (The Outsider, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), who praises the series: “The kind of grittiness, the locations, the way it feels, the way it’s written. It’s a thriller.”
Don Cheadle (Crash, The Guard) will also be returning as James Rhodes. “Looking at the MCU through these different lenses, you get to see all these different sides of the characters. So, we get to really sort of dig into who they are,” he says. “It becomes sort of a cat and mouse game that we build toward to the end of the show.”
Clarke continues, “You can’t predict it, and you can’t preempt it. And you can’t fathom it until it happens.”
The feature ends with a one-liner from Jackson — “I’m Nick Fury. Even when I’m out, I’m in.”
Clarke is not the only actor new to Marvel. Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Lost Daughter) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA, High Fidelity) will also be starring as Special Agent Sonya Falsworth and the antagonist Gravik, respectively. Martin Freeman (Black Panther, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) will return as Everett K. Ross, alongside Killian Scott (Calvary, ‘71), Christopher McDonald (Thelma & Louise, Happy Gilmore), and Carmen Ejogo (Selma, It Comes at Night).
Secret Invasion will be available on June 21st, streaming exclusively on Disney+.
