This month, Marvel series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will be leaving Netflix. According to Comicbook.com, the series have been confirmed to be coming to Disney+ in some countries, including Canada.
When news broke out, social media went ablaze as fans started to wonder when the shows would hit the streaming platform in the States. However, there is no indication that the characters will make their official move to the MCU like Charlie Cox’s (Stardust, Spider-Man: No Way Home) Daredevil and Vicente D’Onofrio’s (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Full Metal Jacket) Kingpin.
Marvel Television first arrived on Netflix in 2015 with the premiere of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Those series, along with Luke Cage and Iron Fist, were a build-up to an Avengers-style team-up in The Defenders miniseries. The series were all eventually canceled in 2019, the year before the Disney+ launch.
The Marvel-Netflix shows are set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they were not acknowledged in mainstream films. This caused a lot of discourse between fans on whether the shows are canon or not, but Cox’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home and D’Onofrio’s appearance in Hawkeye gave fans of the Netflix shows hope that their favorite characters are MCU canon.
Although their arrival on the US platform has not been confirmed yet, fans can probably expect the shows to pop up on Disney+ eventually. Other non-MCU properties have been available to stream on the platform through the Marvel Legacy library.
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders will all be leaving Netflix on February 28.
