The Inhumans has officially gotten a solid premiere date for its unorthodox IMAX debut.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel and ABC series will premiere the first two episodes of its eight episode first season in IMAX theaters on September 4th. The two episodes will run in IMAX theaters in 74 countries and over 1000 locations for two weeks before airing on ABC.
The news of Marvel and ABC’s Inhumans series comes with a sigh of relief, considering that the property’s fate was up in the air when a film adaptation was pulled from the MCU slate back in April. It’s also a nice touch that even though fans won’t be seeing an Inhumans movie anytime soon they will still be able to see the oddball squad on the big screen come September.
The roll-out for the new Marvel/ABC series is unconventional to say the least. Not only are the first two episodes being paid for by IMAX and set to be shot completely with IMAX cameras, but the subsequent six episodes will also take advantage of IMAX cameras for action sequences (many of which will be on the Moon!). It is important to note, however, that the first two episodes of The Inhumans will have additional footage for broadcast that will not be shown in IMAX theaters. This is most likely to give fans who saw the debut in theaters a reason to re-watch the episodes when they air on ABC.
Speaking to THR about the unusual approach ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood said, “We think this is a quadruple win — a win for IMAX, a win for Marvel, a win for ABC studios and a win for ABC to launch a show in an innovative way and get attention.”
ABC could definitely use a win when it comes to its Marvel properties, especially when compared to Marvel’s success on the TV front with Netflix. As Cinemablend details, the latest season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been suffering through some of its worst ratings in the show’s entire run, even with change in time slot and the addition of Ghost Rider. ABC also canceled the Hayley Atwell-starring Agent Carter and pulled the plug on its plans for Marvel’s Most Wanted, which would’ve followed Adrianne Palicki’s Mockingbird and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter as they are on the run from an unknown group trying to kill them.
The Inhumans will focus on the aptly named group of superhuman heroes that includes Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Gorgon, Karnak “The Shatterer”, and Triton. There has been no news yet as to who will be taking the helm on the series. Marvel and ABC have also been mum on the subject of casting.
