After only two episodes, the Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, has received an early season two renewal at CBS, according to Deadline. The series is an extension of the universe executive producer Taylor Sheridan (Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown) built while at Paramount. He has since struck deal with NBCUniversal. Deadline reports the show has been a huge success for the network. The premiere episode alone is the most-watched network original series premiere without a football lead since 2017’s Young Sheldon arrived. Neilsen’s live and same-day ratings tally 9.5M viewers watched, scoring the show the best new network premiere of the 2025-26 season. Since March 1, its accumulated 20.6M views in its first seven days across platforms.
For those unfamiliar with the series’s premise, Luke Grimes (Fifty Shades of Grey, American Sniper) stars as Kayce Dutton, the son of Kevin Costner’s (Bull Durham, Field of Dreams) John Dutton, who joins a U.S. Marshals unit in Montana along with his friend Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green (The O.C., When They See Us). Deadline lists the other co-stars as Arielle Kebbel (Gilmore Girls, Aquamarine), Ash Santos (American Horror Story, Thirst) and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Son). They are joined by original Yellowstone cast members Brecken Miller (Chosen), Gil Birmingham (Wind River, Twilight) and Mo Bring Plenty (Hell on Wheels, The Revenant) reprising their roles. One character that did not return in the spinoff is Kayce’s wife, played by Kelsey Asbille (Fargo, Don’t Move). After she didn’t appear in the trailer, the series confirmed her character, Monica, passed away.
“Marshals delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series,” said Amy Reisenbach, president, CBS Entertainment via Deadline. “The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes.”
Marshals is one of many spinoffs dealing with the Dutton lineage. The original series spawned two prequels — 1883 and 1923, with the latter having two seasons. And two more series are still on the horizon. The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer (Margo’s Got Money Troubles, What Lies Beneath) and Kurt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) is scheduled for March 14 premiere. And fans of Yellowstone will watch Kelly Reilly (Eden Lake, Flight) and Cole Hauser’s (2 Fast 2 Furious, Rogue) characters continue on The Dutton Ranch.
