‘Magnum P.I.’ Sequel to Focus on Daughter of Tom Selleck’s Character

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has teamed up with John Rogers, the creator of Leverage and Eva Longoria for a Magnum P.I. sequel. The series will focus on the daughter of the iconic character portrayed by Tom Selleck. The potential series is an action-packed show with a similar style to the original. Magnum’s daughter Lily AKA ‘Tommy” Magnum will return to Hawaii to assume her father’s mantle at the PI firm.

Lily and her group of friends mix glamorous beaches with a crime-stricken area and modern espionage. Even as she attempts to discover the mystery of the blown spy operation that ended her career in Navy intelligence. Rogers will be penning the script and executive produce alongside Jennifer Court. Additionally, Universal Television-based Longoria will executive produce alongside. Universal Television owns the rights to the sequel and Longoria’s affiliation with the studio is important to the ABC revival.

Magnum P.I. launched in 1980 and was created by Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson. The successful series fan for eight seasons on CBS. Magnum’s daughter was shown in four episodes. She was raised by her mother and following her death Lily was reunited with her birth father. Reboots are in high demand especially since broadcast, cable, and streaming services are looking for proven intellectual property in a bid to cut through a cluttered scripted industry that is quickly approaching 500 original series. Many remakes involve the original producers in some capacity as an increasing amount of studios are looking to gain profit from their existing television/film collection.

Some of the reboots that are already in the works this season are The Lost Boys (The CW), Varsity Blues (CMT), The Departed (Amazon), Let the Right One in (TNT) and L.A. Law. Then there’s the broadcast season which will feature many familiar titles including MacGyver (CBS), Training Day (CBS), Frequency (The CW), Lethal Weapon (Fox), 24: Legacy (Fox), The Exorcist (Fox), and Taken (NBC).
