ITV Drama ‘Victoria’ Renewed for Season 2

Victoria, a historical period drama co-produced by ITV and Masterpiece on PBS, has been renewed for a second season. The Hollywood Reporter had the details.

Victoria stars Jenna Coleman (Doctor WhoDeath Comes to Pemberley) as a young Queen Victoria, as well as Tom Hughes (The Game) as Prince Albert, and Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High CastleParade’s End) as Lord Melbourne. The series was created by Daisy Goodwin, and is produced by the Mammoth Screen production company.

Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, and Kevin Lygo, the channel’s head of television, announced the show would be getting a second season on Friday.

“Mammoth and Daisy Goodwin have brought the characters so vividly to life in this series, and we’re thrilled with the reception for Victoria“, said Lygo. “We’re pleased to be able to confirm that Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes will return to continue the story”.

Goodwin explained what direction season 2 will take: “In the next series [Victoria] faces the very modern dilemma of how to juggle children with her husband and her job. As [she] will discover, it’s hard to be a wife, a mother and ruler of the most powerful nation on earth!”

The first season of Victoria premiered on ITV in the United Kingdom in August, and “averaged 7.7 million consolidated viewers”, making it the channel’s top-rated drama of the year. The drama will make its debut in the United States on January 17th on PBS.
