LJ Smith, Author of ‘Vampire Diaries,’ Will Have ‘The Forbidden Game’ Trilogy Adapted for TV by Greg Berlanti/WBTV

The Forbidden Game, a young adult horror trilogy written by LJ Smith, will be adapted for television. The series will be produced by Greg Berlanti (Life As We Know It) of Berlanti Productions, according to Deadline.

The three books, The Hunter, The Chase and The Kill, were published in 1994 and follow the story of main character Jenny and her six friends as they play a “Jumanji-like game that drops them into different shadow worlds to fight off their worst nightmares, or die and have their souls forever imprisoned,” Nellie Andreeva via Deadline. High stakes continue as Jenny’s love interest Julian tests her loyalty to her friends.

Adapted by WBTV, The Forbidden Game will be Smith’s third book-to-TV series. The Vampire Diaries aired for 8 seasons. With main characters Nina Dobrev (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Elena Gilbert, Paul Wesley (Fallen) as Stefan Salvatore and Ian Somerhalder (Lost) as Damon Salvatore, the show received accolades for best threesome of actors at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards and best fantasy/sci-fi show at the 2014 and 2015 Teen Choice Awards. The Secret Circle aired for one season on the CW.

The series will be executive produced by Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Pan) and David Madden (Separate Lives). The search for a writing team is under way, via Deadline. There has not been mention of potential cast members.
