Live-Action Adaptation Of ‘Gargoyles’ In The Works At Disney+

According to Variety, Disney+ is currently working on developing a live-action adaptation of the famously known animated series Gargoyles. The reboot of the series is being worked on with writer Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) and James Wan‘s (Saw X) Atomic Monster to develop a live-action version. Dauberman will be serving as writer and executive producer with Wan also executive producing.

According to Variety, the logline for the series reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries-long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”

The animated series was created by Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man) and was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation. Premiering on October 24th, 1994, the series aired for three seasons. Although it premiered on Disney, the series was known to have many dark and adult-like themes. The casting for the animated series included Keith David (Krapopolis), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (I Am Legend), Jeff Benet (Johnny Bravo), Frank Welker (Futurama), Thom Adcox-Hernandez (Young Justice), Bill Fagerbakke (SpongeBob SquarePants), and many more. 

According to Variety, the series follows the adventures of a nocturnal species known as gargoyles which are stone during the day but come alive at night. The main clan of gargoyles that the series allows lived in 10th-century Scotland until they were cursed by a magical spell that lay them dormant as stone until one thousand years later. When the spell broke, they found themselves in New York due to a wealthy industrialist named David Xanatos who had them transported from Scotland. The gargoyles claimed the new city as their home and made a vow to protect it.
