Legendary Dan Rather Returns to CBS News For The First Time Since His 2006 Departure

Renowned journalist Dan Rather (What Unites Us, People Of The Century)  made a highly anticipated return to CBS News, marking his first appearance on the network since departing in 2006. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran newsman, celebrated for his distinguished career as a CBS News anchor, is set to appear on CBS Sunday Morning, where he will be interviewed about his work at CBS and his life in news.

Rather is a reputable personality in television news, and his appearance on CBS Sunday Morning will rekindle discussions about the place of journalism in society and the lasting impact of journalists who are willing to speak truth to power. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his return to the network emphasizes how important senior journalists will continue to be in determining the direction of the media.

At 92, Rather will hopefully offer his thoughts on the development of journalism and stress the importance of a free press in maintaining democratic principles. His appearance on CBS Sunday Morning will go down in broadcast history as a significant occasion that highlights his lasting influence and the value of investigative journalism today.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rather claimed that he was used as a scapegoat in a scandal surrounding a 2004 60 Minutes II program on the military record of then-President George W. Bush. The anchor later filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the network. In less than a year, the 60 Minutes spin-off was canceled.

Robert Redford (The Natural, Ordinary People) played Rather in the 2015 movie Truth, which memorialized the incident. Citing the movie as “A disservice not just to the public but to journalists across the world,” CBS declined to accept advertising for the film.

At 92, he will now open up again, this time for the cameras of CBS Sunday Morning, an occasion to talk about his legacy with the network that let him leave. Jane Pauley (Zoolander Two, Madam Secretary) is the host of CBS Sunday Morning. Other planned features include an interview with Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days) and a report about the Kentucky Derby.
