Deadline reports Lou Scheimer, Emmy award-winning co-founder of Saturday morning cartoon specialists Filmation, and the driving force behind animated television greats He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power passed away this past Thursday at the age of 84.
Scheimer’s Filmation company started making cartoons in 1963 with the premiere of Rod Rocket. Filmation would continue in the 60’s working with DC, Filmation created The New Adventures of Superman cartoon in 1966, followed by The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, Aquaman, and The Batman/Superman Hour.
It was the Seventies and Eighties where Filmation really shined though creating hits that would define the company and Scheimer’s legacy in the business. Animated series included He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Ghostbusters, Shazam!, Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, Flash Gordon, and Bravestarr. Scheimer also provided voices for, most notably, Fat Albert‘s Dumb Donald and He-Man‘s King Randor, Stratos, and Orko, among others for his various productions.
In 2003 he received the Annie Award for Special Achievement in Animation.
