Lee Jung-jae of ‘Squid Game’ Previews Plotlines And When Production For Second Season Will Begin

According to ScreenRant, Lee Jung-jae (The Housemaid, Deliver us from Evil, Hunt) , the main protagonist in the twisted Netflix original Squid Game, revealed information about the long-awaited second season of the smash-hit Korea-centric show in an interview with AllKPop on February 14th, 2023. He gives insight on the new plot detail and when filming will begin.

In the interview Lee talks about his character, Seong Gi-hun, seeking vengeance on the person responsible for the entire charade of the game and the countless amount of death it coincided with: The Front Man aka Hwang In-ho portrayed by Korean actor Lee Byung-hun (Mr. Sunshine, Emergency Declaration, The Magnificent Seven). Lee also disclosed that season two will start production in the summer later this year, scheduled to film for 10 months. His full quote on Squid Game plot lines and production can be seen here:

“As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge, and the key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung Hun sunbae, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story. This is the first time that I’ll be working with Lee Byung Hun sunbae, actually. Well, we worked on a drama called ‘White Nights 3.98’ back in the day, but we didn’t have any scenes together. Anyways, ‘Squid Game 2’ will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.”

Squid Game was a  massive success and has become the most watched Korean television show in the United States and countless other places. Many other apocalyptic shows and movies followed suit or inspired Squid Game‘s fame like Train to Busan, Parasite, and All of us are Dead. Most of these shows have even won prestigious awards like the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020 (Parasite).

Released in September of 2021, Squid Game was an instant hit reaching the top spot on Netflix’s charts in 90 countries, and the streaming service announced that the series had garnered over 111 million viewers worldwide in the first weeks of its release. Becoming a massive success, Squid Game became a frontrunner in popularity for the streaming service on par with other Netflix originals like Stranger Things, BoJack Horseman, and Wednesday.

The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk (Silenced, The Fortress, Miss Granny) shares his expectations for the second season as well as his inspiration and moral of the story: how money, greed, and rampant capitalism sullies connections and incentivizes bad decisions. Hwang states he has worked on Squid Game for several years and wishes to continue the universe for several years to come.
