Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been renewed for a 20th season on NBC, according to Deadline. The series is produced by Emmy-winner Dick Wolf and Dick Wolf Films in association with Universal Television. SVU is tied with the show Gunsmoke for the longest-running drama series.
The network has also renewed seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, which are all produced by Wolf.
The series follows the life and crimes of an elite squad of detectives who lead the Special Victims Unit inside of the New York City Police Department. Mariska Hargitay stars in the show as Lt. Olivia Benson who is commander of the unit. The other lead detectives include Ice T, Peter Scanavino, Philip Winchester, and Kelli Giddish.
When the news broke about the renewal, Ice T took to Twitter to celebrate. “FYI: SVU has OFFICIALLY been picked up for season #20 Run and tell that!” he said.
Hagritay has been nominated eight times for an Emmy, winning once back in 2006 for Lead Actress in a Drama series for her role as Lt. Benson. SVU also snagged five guest star Emmy wins over the 19 seasons. The winners include Amanda Plummer, Cynthia Nixon, Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, and Leslie Carson.
