‘Lanterns’: Potential Release Date Appears Online For HBO’s DCU Series

While HBO readies the fiery return for one franchise this June, another will arrive to continue new universe’s era in August. The DCU’s Lanterns has been one of the most talked about series from DC co-leaders James Gunn (Clayface, Creature Commandos) and Peter Safran (Heist, Peacemaker). According to Releases.com, the series has a pending release date of Sunday, August 16.

Helmed by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), the series finds two of DC Comics most-known heroes, Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, venturing from space to the American heartland to solve a murder mystery. The two ring bearers must quell outside sources as well as inner friction, as the rookie, played by Aaron Pierre (Genius: MLK /X, Rebel Ridge) seeks to replace the veteran crusader, played by Kyle Chandler (Anniversary, Friday Night Lights).

Announced in 2023 as part of DC Studios new TV and film universe, it was greenlighted in June 2024 with Chandler announced as lead months later. After a short bidding war with Stephan James (Homecoming, If Beale Street Could Talk), Pierre was announced as Stewart. Joining the duo are Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men, Dept Q.), Garret Dillahunt (High Potential, Red Right Hand), Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of, Deli Boys) and Ulrich Thomsen (Brothers, The Celebration) as the legendary foe, Sinestro.

Additional cast include Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting, Mrs. Fletcher) and J. Alphonse Nicholson (They Cloned Tyrone, If I Go Will They Miss Me) as John’s parents, and Nathan Fillion (The Rookie, Firefly) as his Superman character, Guy Gardner. It was recently confirmed that Pierre’s Stewart will trade screens and appear in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, connecting the TV landscape to the cinematic universe.

While WBD nor HBO have confirmed the date just yet, it seems plausible that the series would arrive in the primetime Sunday evening slot following House of the Dragon‘s third-season run, which is scheduled for June 21 through August 9.
