Sinking into the quicksand of an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, Hulu has found a new Earth sucker to replace Justin Roiland in the animated sitcom Solar Opposites. Dan Stevens (Legion, Gaslit) will now pilot the ship as Korvo, a cranky alien who broadcasts his hatred for Earth and longs to repair his spaceship in order to escape the planet. This vile (in the best way possible) comedy, from executive producers Josh Bycel (The Big Show Show, LA to Vegas) and Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), will drop down onto the loathed planet for its fourth season in August. Originally fed from the hands of McMahan and Roiland (King Star King, Half in the Bag), the disparaging series ejected Roiland’s seat in January due to domestic violence charges.
Stevens’ new voice role drops him dead center into the cosmos of 20th Television Animation, as he also plunges into Apple’s adult animated sitcom Central Park. Stevens is already prominent in the voice acting world transforming into his animated alter ego Prince Charles for HBO Max’s The Prince and as Scarlemagne in Netflix’s Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
The fourth season of Solar Opposites unleashes all 11 episodes on Hulu Aug. 14, with a Valentine’s Day special revving it up next year. Back in Oct. 2022, the show earned an early renewal for season five.
Ousted from Solar Opposites and fired from Adult Swim’s audience-devoted Rick and Morty, earlier this year Roiland also lost his producing deal with 20th Television Animation.
Roiland, the voice behind the title roles of both shows, co-created Rick and Morty alongside Dan Harmon (Community: Webisodes, Bitch: The Scary Terry Story). As for who will be recast as Roiland’s roles for the Warner Bros. Discovery’s Adult Swim show remains unknown. Sources say that Rick and Morty may now need to be voiced by two separate actors.
After allegations of domestic violence crystallized and reports stripped away the shadows of years of allegedly unsettling behavior, Roiland’s Hollywood empire crumbled. Dismissed of the domestic violence charges by an Orange County District Attorney due to insufficient evidence, Roiland applauded the outcome as “justice,” maintaining that the allegations wrung “false.”
Meanwhile, the future of Hulu’s Koala Man, an animated series executive produced by Roiland, who also has a voice role in the show, and which aired it’s first season in January, may unravel.
Stevens, repped by Peikoff Mahan and CAA, made his most recent appearance on the Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales.
