Horror film legend John Carpenter created the slasher genre of movies with the commercial success of Halloween (1978). A screenwriter, composer, and filmmaker, Carpenter’s decades of his work inspired him to collaborate with wife Sandy King and her Storm King Productions, to create division under the company called Storm King Comics where artists and writers of the horror genre would establish and present their work.
Out of Storm King Comics came the award-winning annual anthology, John Carpenter’s Tales for a Halloween Night. Last year, it was announced that Syfy was developing the comics into TV series, but that exciting news was short-lived when that plan was scrapped.
“We had one [project] where SYFY wanted Tales for a Halloween Night but it quickly became evident that they just wanted the title. And I really saw a disaster on the horizon,” explained King. “So I went, ‘No, no, no. This is not a good idea.’ It was a greenlit series but if it’s not gonna be something cool for the fans and for the eventual audience, then I don’t think it’s a good idea to do it.”
Fans of the comic series should be delighted to know how much King cares for the project and wants it done right. Later, King must have found some capable hands at Paramount who have taken up the responsibility to develop the series.
“I think we have a pretty good idea what our fans want to see and we definitely have a pretty good idea what should come out from,” King explained. “If somebody’s a fan of that anthology, there should be a character to any show that comes out of it…it shouldn’t be just barfing up the books. It should be something that grows out of it or has a flavor of it or in some way meets the expectations or why are we giving it that title? Call it ‘Bozo Goes To Mars’ or something else.”
The question remains on whether Carpenter will be involved in this TV series as writer, director, or producer for the episodes. “We’ll see,” said Carpenter. “We’re just getting cranked up.”
