A new Queen has arrived in the Doctor Who universe. According to Deadline, the two-time champion of RuPaul’s Drag Race Jinkx Monsoon (Happiest Season, AJ and the Queen) has joined the cast of the famous British show Doctor Who in what is described as major role. Monsoon will make their debut alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, The Last Letter from Your Lover), and Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson (Coronation Street, Jamie Johnson). The BBC has not released any details surrounding Monsoon’s character.
According to Deadline, Monsoon is famous for their singing, acting, and drag performing abilities that led them to win RuPaul’s Drag Race season five and to win the title of Queen of Queens when they won Drag Race All Stars. Recently, Monsoon finished a sell-out run on Broadway where they played Matron “Mama” Morton in the iconic musical show Chicago. Their performance was a historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community since it is the first time a drag queen performed on a Broadway stage.
Monsoon is the latest person to join the cast of the series. It was also previously announced that Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper) has joined the Doctor Who cast and will play the character of Rose Temple-Noble. She is scheduled to appear in the episodes airing during the show’s 60th anniversary in 2023.
The show’s latest episode left fans wondering what is going to happen next as David Tennant (Jessica Jones, Broadchurch) has made a triumphant return to Doctor Who playing the Fourteenth Doctor. The episode was special released during the BBC’s centenary special and marked the end of Jodie Whittaker’s (Broadchurch, Journeyman) turn as the Doctor.
Days later, it was announced that Doctor Who had found a new streaming home with Disney+ and the BBC announcing a new partnership. New Doctor Who episodes will stream on Disney+ worldwide while remaining on the BBC channel in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Doctor Who is a sci-fi show about an alien called The Doctor that travels through time and space in the TARDIS. The Doctor spends quite a bit of time saving the Earth from alien attacks and Earth is where they usually meet their companions. The show has been airing since 1963 with William Hartnell (Carry On Sergeant, Escape) playing the Doctor back then. Since that first episode, fifteen different actors have interpreted the Doctor, with Gatwa being the latest to star in this iconic role.
New episodes of Doctor Who will premiere during the show’s 60th anniversary in November 2023. Older seasons of Doctor Who starring Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World, The A Word), Tennant, Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, Morbius), Peter Capaldi (Suicide Squad, The Thick of It), and Whittaker are available to stream on HBO Max and Amazon Prime.
