DC Studios and HBO Max have confirmed the making of a Superman spinoff show called DC Crime, as reported by Deadline. The series will star Skyler Gisondo (Superman, The Righteous Gemstones), reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen from the 2025 film, Superman.
According to Deadline, the series will serve as a true crime docuseries with Jimmy Olsen serving as host. The first season will primarily focus on the big bad Gorilla Grodd and his fights with The Flash. The character Gorilla Grodd is said to be a gorilla who acquired psychic powers after an encounter with an alien spaceship. The character was created back in 1959 and was formerly a part of DC’s Arrow-verse on The CW, most notably The Flash.
The writers in charge of this series are Tony Yacenda (Dave, Chad Powers) and Dan Perrault (American Vandal, The Residence), via Deadline. They will also serve as executive producers and showrun the series. DC Studios bosses James Gunn (The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos) and Peter Safran (Superman, Aquaman) will oversee production with Warner Bros. Television producing the series.
According to Variety, Yacenda and Perrault are no strangers when it comes to the mockumentary genre. The pair were creators of the critically-acclaimed Netflix show, American Vandal, which was a spoof of the true crime genre. The show ran for two seasons and, in its first season, won a Peabody Award and was nominated for an Emmy for Best Writing for a Comedy series.
According to Variety, Gunn and Safran are in the process of building an interconnected universe between DC’s film and TV series. Projects still in development include an Amanda Waller show and Paradise Lost, centering on Wonder Woman’s birthplace. With V for Vendetta in the works, along with Lanterns, there is no telling what the future holds for DC Studios. We’ll have to stay tuned for a teaser of the show.
