Jenna Dewan-Tatum Joins ‘Supergirl’ This Week, Adds New Love Triangle

Is love in the air for Supergirl? Actually, it’s more like a love triangle. The weird romantic tension between James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and Kara Zor-El/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) is about to get even more awkward. Starting this week, Jenna Dewan-Tatum (Witches of East End, American Horror Story) will be appearing on Supergirl as Lucy Lane. Rumor has it she’s in town to kiss and make up with her ex, a.k.a. James Olsen, a.k.a. Kara’s crushCBS announced back in August that Dewan-Tatum  would be joining the Supergirl cast as a recurring character. And yes, Lucy Lane is related to Lois Lane. In fact, Lucy is Lois’s younger sister.

Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains in an interview with TV Guide that Lane comes to National City mostly because of a job, but they also wanted to introduce her in order to explore a love triangle. But the intention is not to start any catfighting between Kara and Lane, according to executive producer Sarah Schechter in the same interview. Since the driving force behind the Supergirl series is girl power, Lane is going to be a strong, confident woman. The producers say they want fans to admire Lane, not hate her. The producers want to introduce another role model for girls, but it sounds like Lane may even be an inspiration to Kara.

Since the show is still very new to TV, it will be interesting to see how the characters continue to grow and develop. It makes sense for the producers to introduce Lucy Lane to further the romantic tension. So far Kara’s character has been adorably awkward in almost every situation, but when she’s around Olsen, the awkwardness goes off the charts. She’s clearly uncomfortable in her own skin, which a lot of viewers can relate to. And crushes in particular can be messy and nothing is ever smooth sailing. As Kara tries to figure out how her role as a superhero fits into her life, it only makes sense that she try to balance a love life as well.

The producers want to help develop Kara’s character by adding the additional aspect of a love triangle, but they may need to check their math. In the most recent episode, Olsen and Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) were openly vying for Kara’s approval. Only two episodes have aired and already Kara is stuck in a love triangle. And now we can expect Lane to add to the love… square? Quadrangle? Clearly we are going to see Supergirl navigate several love polygons while also saving the world from extraterrestrial criminals.
