Jean Smart To Star In HBO Max Dark Comedy

The Emmy Award-winning actress Jean Smart is set for another run with WarnerMedia after hit series Watchmen. HBO Max announced on Tuesday that Smart would star in a dark comedy as a Las Vega diva mentoring a 25-year-old outcast. The untitled show will be executive produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place) and written by the Broad City trio Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky.

According to Deadline, the series originally received a pilot order in late January but was a part of the many Hollywood productions halted from the on-going pandemic. However, the series pitch had enough potential and with the casting of Smart as a lead, HBO Max ordered 10 episodes for the first season. In a statement, head of original content for HBO Max Sarah Aubrey explained that she hold a lot of hope for that new series. “When this dream team came to us, we jumped at the chance to develop this project, which features two complex female characters working in comedy and facing the professional and personal challenges that come along with it. When Jean Smart came aboard, we were even more delighted to move forward. We’re excited to be working with this winning combination of talent and confident the show will fit perfectly into our robust slate of HBO Max Originals.”

This is Smart’s second planned collaboration with HBO Max after action comedy Superintelligence with Melissa McCarthy (The Heat). In addition, the Legion actress will appear on HBO limited series Mare of Easttown with co-star Kate Winslet (Wonder Wheel).

A premiere date is yet to be determined.
