The DCU’s Waller series was announced quite a while ago back in January 2023, and updates on the series’ production efforts have been sparse, almost radio silent. According to Comicbook.com, it isn’t the only project to see slow progress, as The Authority and Sgt. Rock have also been paused. Fortunately for fans, James Gunn (Superman, The Suicide Squad) has at least provided an update on Waller in a new interview with People while at the premiere of the second season of Peacemaker.
“We’re working on it, so we’ll see what happens. Some things have moved faster than others. Waller’s not been the fastest,” Gunn said to People via Comicbook.com. “But I can’t wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again.”
Viola Davis (Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) first played Amanda Waller in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. According to Comicbook.com, the film was poorly received, although Davis’ character seemed to be so popular with fans and audiences to the point where Gunn brought her back in the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, as well as reprising her role in the hit series Peacemaker. However, since then, Davis has not played Amanda Waller in a bit.
Comicbook.com writes that Peter Safran (Superman, The Suicide Squad), who works with Gunn as DC Studio’s co-head, said that they’d tried working on the Waller series a couple times, but haven’t exactly hit the mark yet. Gunn and Safran are big on quality, and have both said on a couple occasions that they never move forward on projects unless the scripts are up to standards. Therefore, luckily for fans, waiting a little bit on the Waller series means the two co-heads will deliver something with quality. However, this does mean that projects such as the 2026 Clayface film, which was announced later than Waller, sometimes will move higher up in priority.
