After an almost year-long hiatus and plenty of mixed signals, HBO Max’s Peacemaker season three may have received a sign of return. According to Screenrant, a comment from James Gunn (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy) on a fan Thread post breaks the silence around the show’s third season.
The finale of Peacemaker season two leaves protagonist Christopher Smith, played by John Cena (Raw is War, Little Brother), in a very uncertain position. After being captured by Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo (Boss Level, The Purge: Anarchy), Chris was taken by A.R.G.U.S. and sent through a portal to Salvation, an alternate dimension that Flag plans to use as a prison for metahumans. Chris is ultimately left there with no clear way back. Meanwhile, the finale reveals a connection between Rick Flag Sr. and Lex Luthor, creating several possibilities for where the story could go if the series returns for another season.
Originally, Gunn made an announcement at the end of season two that a third season was not “in the works.”
However, speculation grew after a fan asked Gunn in a Threads post if there was a chance of Peacemaker being renewed for a season three.
Gunn responded by posting a thinking-face emoji.

The comment gives hope for Peacemaker’s return, especially compared to previous comments about the show.
Peacemaker was originally a Charlton Comics character. Writer Joe Gil created the character, Christopher Smith, and Pat Boyette drew him in 1966. Peacemaker made his first debut in Fight’ 5 #40.
DC Comics acquired the character and turned him into a true antihero. The character’s backstory was turned around to be much harsher and dark. Screenrant explained how Smith was violent in his pursuit for justice “whose actions were influenced by traumatic events from his past.”
Stream season one and two of Peacemaker on HBO Max. Season three is not yet confirmed.
