ITV’s UK Drama ‘Doc Martin’ To End With Tenth Season

UK drama Doc Martin is coming to an end. According to Deadline, the ITV series’ tenth season will be it’s last, cementing a sixteen-year run. Created by Dominic Minghella (Robin Hood, The Scapegoat), Doc Martin follows the medical practice of Martin Ellingham, played by Martin Clunes (Men Behaving Badly, Manhunt).

“We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin,” Clunes and his wife, Philippa Braithwaite, said in a joint statement, via Deadline. “When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have. The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time. However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn. We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it,” the couple said via Deadline.

According to Deadline, Clunes’ doctor is great physician who doesn’t possess much patience for people, including his patients. Along with Clunes’ Martin, the series cast includes Caroline Catz (DCI Banks, The Vice), Joe Absolom (Long Time Dead, A Confession), Dame Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park, What A Girl Wants), Ian McNeice (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, The Beautician and the Beast), John Marquez (One Life and Two Trails, In the Club), Jessica Ransom (Horrible Histories, Zapped), and Selina Cadell (The Lady Vanishes, Match Point), according to Deadline. Buffalo Pictures handles production with Mark Crowdy (Saving Grace, Sorted) serving as executive producer. Braithwaite produces the series as well.

“I just want to thank Martin and Philippa and everyone involved in Doc Martin, because it’s a brilliant, beautifully made series that has delighted audiences for many years,” ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill said, via Deadline. I am pleased that we are making series 10 and sad this will be the last, but respect their decision to bring it to a close.”
