Issa Rae’s HBO Max Series ‘Insecure’ To Now Run on OWN

According to Deadline, HBO Max’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series Insecure will now begin airing two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday nights on OWN. Insecure will debut on OWN on Tuesday, February 7, at 6:00 p.m. PST with the series’ pilot episode titled “Insecure as F**k.”

For those not in the know, Insecure tells the story of best friends Issa, played by Issa Rae (The Hate U Give, The Lovebirds), and Molly, played by Yvonne Orji (My Mom, Your Dad, Vacation Friends), two ambitious women in their late-20’s struggling to navigate their career and relationship experiences while living in their hometown of South Los Angeles, California. The half-hour series explores the Black female experience from the perspective of both Issa and Molly as they deal with social and racial issues which relate to the modern-day struggles facing people of color in America.

Insecure also boasts the acting talents of stars such as Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, the Escape Room franchise), Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus, the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise), and Amanda Seales (Black-ish, Everything’s Gonna Be All White). The series was created by Rae and Larry Wilmore (The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, The Bernie Mac Show), with Rae also serving as executive producer.

As written by Deadline, the decision to give Insecure an off-network run on basic cable is a rare one considering that premium content is typically sanitized in order to comply with ad-supported network’s broadcast standards for nudity, language, violence, and so on. Interestingly, the agreement between HBO Max and Rae will not allow for any edits or content alteration besides the inclusion of commercial breaks, in other words, Insecure will air on OWN as it was created for HBO.

During Insecure‘s five season run from 2016 to 2021 the series earned a total of fourteen Emmy Award nominations, as well as a win for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series back in 2020.
